The NSW Government is upgrading Mona Vale Road from two to four lanes between Terrey Hills and Mona Vale. The upgrade is being carried out in two stages to provide customers with a better travelling experience and to improve safety and traffic flow.

The upgrade will:

  • provide an essential link between Sydney’s northern beaches and the north shore

  • improve safety with additional lanes, widened shoulders, a separated median and a heavy vehicle arrester bed

  • provide better access for Ingleside and Elanora Heights residentsenable fauna to cross Mona Vale Road safely by constructing several fauna crossings.

Roads and Maritime Services will start work to upgrade Mona Vale Road East from Tuesday 29 January.(2019)

The first activities on site will include:

  • removing trees, shrubs and other vegetation on both sides of Mona Vale Road between Daydream Street, Mona Vale, and Lane Cove Road, Ingleside

  • installing traffic controls, such as barriers, signs and linemarking

  • setting up the site compound and ancillary facilities.

This work will take up to 16 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Our work schedule

Our standard working hours on the project will be between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

Given the challenging terrain, and limited space in some sections, some of this work will be carried out at night to ensure the safety of motorists and workers and minimise the impact on the road network.

Out of hours work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am from Monday to Friday.

There will be up to four shifts of night work per week, but only two consecutive nights in the same area. Affected residents will be notified in advance.

Early work for Mona Vale Road West

We are also planning for the future Mona Vale Road West upgrade.

We will excavate large volumes of soil and rock during construction of the Mona Vale Road East project. We will reuse this material to build an embankment required for the Mona Vale Road West upgrade.

To prepare for this early work on Mona Vale Road West, we will also remove trees, shrubs and vegetation from a section of land between Wirreanda Road and Mona Vale Road at Ingleside.

How will the work affect you?

The work will involve machinery which will generate some noise, including trucks, chainsaws, excavators, mulchers and chippers. We will also use cranes and elevated platforms.

We will make every effort to minimise the impact by notifying residents before work starts near their property, using noise shields to dampen noise where possible, and ensuring equipment and vehicles are turned off when not in use.

During night work, we will focus lights only on the working area. However, there may be some light spill-over into some nearby residences. No mulching will take place during night work.

We will schedule the work in stages at different locations so residents will not be affected for more than two consecutive nights per week.

Roads and Maritime has considered the impact of removing trees along Mona Vale Road for this project. We have steps in place to minimise the impacts to the fauna.

Traffic changes

Temporary traffic changes will be in place along Mona Vale Road to ensure the work zone is safe for motorists and workers. During night work, one lane will be closed to traffic, with contraflow arrangements in place that may affect travel times.

Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs. For the latest traffic updates, contact 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.

Further work in early 2019

Other work to occur in the coming months will include:

  • removing topsoil within the construction area, to be stockpiled for later use

  • adjusting and relocating utilities along Mona Vale Road

  • removing structures within the construction area.

We will provide further information about this work in future notifications.
