Friends of Mona Vale meet with the RMS on Mona Vale Road about the new upgrade.
Mona Vale Road madness
Local group criticises upgrade plans
Last month, Pittwater MP Rob Stokes announced the NSW government has awarded the construction contract for the upgrade of Mona Vale Road East to Georgiou Group Pty Ltd.
The $140 million project, between Foley Street in Mona Vale and Manor Road in Ingleside, will involve building additional climbing and descending lanes to improve travel times, and the introduction of median separation and a heavy vehicle arrester bed to help address the road's tragic crash history.
On-site works will commence in February, with the project set for completion in 2022.
However, local resident group Friends of Mona Vale, which has had discussions with the RMS network general manager Steven Head and Matty Mathivanar, project manager for Mona Vale Road East, claims the western section must be completed first.
The group's spokesperson Phil Walker tells Peninsula Living, "These plans will only worsen the bottleneck at the Baha'i Temple/Powderworks Road intersection. Vehicles when travelling from Mona Vale up Mona Vale Road will arrive at that location quicker.
"This, together with the existing traffic coming up Powderworks Road from Narrabeen, will be a far worse bottleneck than is presently the case and will result in more delays as all traffic will still have to merge into the one westbound lane.
"Additional traffic delays, driver frustration and reduced safety will result." Requests for an additional meeting with the RMS to discuss this issue have been refused.
Mr Walker adds, "We don't want them to stop spending money on Mona Vale Road, but there are better ways they can do it.
No one will listen to common sense - it's obvious Mona Vale Road 'West' must be upgraded first."
