press release

5 november 2018

In the Saturday Edition of the Manly Daily 3 November 2018 an article was printed regarding the upgrading of Mona Vale Road Eastern Section (Stage 2) with works commencing in February 2019. See article https://friendsofmonavale.wixsite.com/website/manly-daily-3-november-2018

Friends of Mona Vale support the upgrading of Mona Vale Road however we have long stated it is the western section that must be done first.

We have had discussions with RMS Network General Manager Mr. Steven Head and an onsite meeting with Mr. Matty Mathivanar Project Manager for Mona Vale Road East regarding this issue in what we maintain is a mistake doing the east upgrade first. It will only worsen the bottleneck at the Baha'i Temple / Powderworks Road intersection.

Vehicles when travelling from Mona Vale up Mona Vale Road will arrive at that location quicker. This together with the existing traffic coming up Powderworks Road from Narrabeen will be a far worse bottleneck than is presently the case.

This will result in more delays than at present, as all traffic will still have to merge into the one west bound lane. Additional traffic delays, driver frustration and reduced safety will result.

Requests for an additional meeting with the RMS to discuss this issue were met with refusal.

We have also had discussions with local member Rob Stokes and no one will listen to commonsense that it is obvious that Mona Vale Road ‘West’  must be upgraded first.

Following the sending out of the press release an email was recieved demonstrating how dangerous the conditions are at the Bahai Temple / Mona Vale Road / Powderworks Road intersection. These WILL NOT be improved by the upgrading of Mona Vale Road East. The conditions will REMAIN THE SAME until Mona Vale Road West upgrade is completed, which Friends of Mona Vale have been campaigning must be done first to get rid of the bottleneck of traffic at this intersection and make it safer for all motorists and pedestrians.

The emails states:-

Dear Friends of Mona Vale

Thank you for  sending me your email , I don’t have a personal opinion on the issue however .

I thought to send you Photos for your files, we were stuck in stationery traffic for 2 hours for this typical accident on east side of Mona Vale Rd at Powderworks intersection where North travelling vehicles on Mona Vale Rd turn right into Powderworks Rd and south  travelling vehicles on Mona  Vale Rd smash into them.

It’s fairly common as we live  on Powderworks Rd .

Many accidents occur at this spot  for various other reasons too, merging traffic seems one reason, head ons.

There was an issue ,with this accident  which I sent to Rob Stokes at the time that emergency vehicles , could not get through from Mona Vale as traffic was banked back to Mona Vale and Powderworks was clogged too , I think they got through via Terry Hills and eventually up Powderworks , it was A COMPLETE DISASTER
